In our modern world, numerous devices, critical infrastructure, and networks rely on GPS or other GNSS for navigation, accurate timing, and synchronization, vital across various sectors like Power and Utility Companies, Financial Markets, and Mobile Networks. A report by the US Department of Homeland Security highlights the widespread usage of GPS timing across critical sectors.
However, the weak satellite signals from GNSS units are vulnerable to intentional or unintentional interference, such as blocking, jamming, or spoofing, posing significant threats to critical infrastructure. Recent research showcased how simple spoofers could disrupt power networks, causing widespread outages. Similarly, disruptions to timing networks in financial institutions could lead to substantial financial losses.
Our patented Time FireWall™ (TFW™) addresses these challenges by ensuring security and backup for timing networks. The TFW™, a compact 19-inch 1U unit, sits between the antenna and the GNSS receiver. It verifies signal integrity using an internal atomic clock and various techniques. When the GNSS signal is reliable, it passes an RF signal to the timing network with integrity assurance. If the signal is deemed unreliable due to interference, the TFW™ activates a warning alarm and switches to an alternate GNSS signal using its internal satellite signal simulator and Rubidium Atomic Clock, ensuring continuous operation even in adverse conditions.
